Course Objectives/Description:

This course aims at introducing students to the basics of the French language. Taking a communication-based and task-based approach to teaching French, the course will cover the four basic language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. There will be greater focus on the first three of these skills as the objective is for students to be able to identify French when they see it or hear it and to be able to make themselves understood even if they are unable to form long sentences. It is anticipated that by the end of the course, the students will have a foundation of grammar and vocabulary to build upon in the subsequent courses.

Course Outcomes:

  1. In addition to an introduction to French and Francophone culture, by the end of the course, the students are expected to have acquired the A1 language level. This means that they shall be able to do the following things:
  2. Listening Comprehension - To be able to listen and recognize familiar words and very basic phrases concerning themselves, their family and immediate surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly
  3. Reading Comprehension - To be able to read and recognize familiar words, names and simple sentences on posters or notices
  4. Spoken interaction and production - To be able to speak and interact in a simple way if the other person is prepared to repeat things, speak slowly and help them formulate sentences. Students will be able to describe where they live and the people they know using basic sentences.
